Guestpost: Cotton’s 5 Favorite Diet Friendly Drinks!

I am so, so excited to introduce Cotton to you guys! She is one of my favourite bloggers and she also has a fabulous tumblr ;-) She's a recent UF grad, has an impeccable sense of fashion, and a sister of Sigma Kappa. Make sure you go visit her blog and follow her- you won't regret it :)

Hey Y’all! My name is Cotton from Cotton’s Pickins and I am so excited to be guest blogging for Tori today!

One of the most common New Year’s Resolutions is to lose weight. Whether we want to simply get back into pre-holiday shape or to drop 20 lbs in then ext 90 days, most of us have some type of health goal associated with the new year.

When it comes losing weight, most recommend that you do not drink at all because alcohol is “empty calories.”  I did this once and the hardest part for me was learning how to add alcohol back into my diet! Instead, I’ve found a few drinks that will best serve anyone trying not to waste too many of your daily calories on alcohol!

Skinny Pirate
Captain and Coke is a classic, bar friendly option. However, using regular soda as a mixer will throw in an extra 100 calories into each drink! If this is a favorite of yours, too, go for a skinny pirate--Captain and Diet Coke! It’s a great alternative choice and a great “at the bar” option because you know exactly what you are getting!

Cranberry and Vodka
This is another bar-friendly option because it is such a simple choice! Vodka and Cranberry garnished with a lime is the perfect choice for the sweet drink lover. Those super sugary drinks will align with any diet, but the flavors of this class offer a great alternative at only 160 calories per serving!

Wine…in moderation!
This is a tough one for a lot of my college friendly. I see so many girlfriends binge on wine with a “finish the bottle mentality.” One glass of wine, 5oz. is usually 100-110 calories—red or white. I know I personally drink more when I drink a white wine so when I want to stick to sipping, I move towards a red wine.  Wine is an easy option when consumed in moderation!

Bloody Mary
This may come as a shock to many, but as someone who hates tomatoes, I just love me some bloody mary!  The mixer is a tomato juice, which I see as worth the calories (even though it’s not much), especially when you are having a day-drink.  Want to add a little pep to your Bloody Mary? I love adding spicy BBQ rub or jalapenos to my mix for an extra kick! This favorite only packs about 120 calories per serving—including the veggie juice!

Vodka Water + Crystal Light
I picked up this tip from a sorority sister! When she goes to the bar, instead of worrying about what they actually put into your drink, she simply orders a vodka water! Then, once she has the drink in hand, pulls out a packet of crystal light in her favorite flavor and pours it right in!  Since the water had no claories and the Crystal Light is usually 5, you are looking at around 100 calories for your drink! Want a little extra carbonation? Try ordering a vodka and club soda (which also has zero calories) instead!

A go-to for many will always be “light beer” because it is just an “easy” diet choice. My issue with beer is this—all of the carbs in a beer, even light beer, makes me feel bloated later that evening and the next morning. To me, this is a bit counterproductive and not the best option. Plus, most of us will drink a bottle of beer much faster than we will sip on a mixed drink.

Remember to enjoy these drinks in moderation. A diet is all about a lifestyle change and learning to make smarter choices! Hopefully these choices keep you from feeling like you are missing out but allow you to stay on the right track!

Thanks again for letting me take over today! Please stop by Cotton’s Pickins! I’d love to meet some new readers!

New Years Eve Activities

I feel like everyone is expected to "go out" for New Years, either at a friend's house party or at a bar/club. Most of my close friends all go out for NYE>
I, for one, have never "gone out." Although it was because in my parents' homeland, it's normal to spend it with family (and because I am still in college- my sister does her own thing on NYE), I have never "gone out."

So what are fun ways of spending your New Year's Eve, other than "going out"?

Pinterest

1. Fancy dinner + Movie/TV with whomever and champagne
Cheesy, I know. But hey, I love my family and it's more of a cultural thing about my homeland. It's also fun too. This is what I tend to do every year :)
Have you thought about watching the movie New Year's Eve? hehe

2. Travel to a new city and count down at its downtown!
I'm going to be extremely stereotypical and suggest NYC. But I'm also curious as to what a warmer city in the south or even DC would bring!

3. Board games (Bingo, Scrabble, you name it)
Some of my friends have sangria and do board games every year, and they love it. It's laid back, it's cute, and it's fun.

4. Dress up pot luck dinner
Have everyone bring a fancy fancy dish, and do black tie attire. Not only will you be able to eat good but cheap food, you'll be in your own home so you won't be getting your toes stepped on, and won't have to brave the mid-December cold. And plenty of photos to upload onto Facebook the next day ;)

5. Movie/TV show marathon night with takeout
For example, watch all of the Harry Potter movies. Or race through Downton Abbey with a box of Chinese food. I feel like this would be fabulous haha.

6. Go stargazing with a loved one with blankets/food/etc.
Cold, I know. But it's romantic. And hey, who doesn't like romantic?

7. Act like it's any other day and go to bed
Hey, this also works!

What are your favourite ways to spend the NYE? Do you do the conventional "going out"?

New Year's Eve Dresses

2013 is fast approaching, and 2012 is fast leaving!
Can you believe it? It has been such a fast year!

I know that everyone has some awesome, awesome NYE plans, and a lot will require dressing up, so I picked out a couple of NYE-worthy dresses.

New Year's Eve Dresses

Lilly Pulitzer dress/ Alice + Olivia a line dress, $785 / Kate Spade long sleeve dress / Dress / Zara cutout dress / ASOS dress / Paprika sequin party dress

I think NYE is the one time that sparkles are this in.
And I'm okay with hopping onto that train because they're just too perfect for the occasion!

I've always wanted to ring in the new year with friends at a bar etc., but at my parents' homeland, they do family style (like Christmas here) so my family has always had family new years via tradition.
However, this year it'll be a little different because the boyfriend will be visiting me -I'm so excited for my New Years Kiss :)

Enjoy your evening, ladies and gents!

Pitch Perfect Loving

Have you guys watched Pitch Perfect before?

image via imdb

Apparently I was the last one out of my friends.
But I loved it.
It was so funny, happy, and light hearted.
Not to mention the girls were damn good singers.
It's definitely not an Academy Award movie, but for a group of girls who just want to sit back and relax, it's perfect :)

I also LOVED the main character Beca.
She was just so cool, collected, and laid back.
I also loved Beca's style - it really reflects her personality. I wish I could pull off her look!

I'm too big of a scardy cat to even try the blue smokey eye look.
Did you know Anna Kendrick who played Beca was also in Twilight and Up in the Air?
She's so talented!

Anyone else love Pitch Perfect as much as I do?

A Christmas Tree without Trees

It's almost Christmas!

I get so happy when I see all of the presents under the tree- it's so pretty.
I hate opening presents on Christmas day because the presents disappear :/

Anyways, I found a really cute tree idea on Pinterest today.

Pinterest
Isn't that adorable?
It's going to be perfect for next year when I am in a tiny apartment by myself and cannot afford to get myself a tree. I can get a tree - a pretty one- without buying a tree!

The Tori Family always spend Christmas Eve at 4 o'clock mass, then a dinner outing, and then a movie at the theatre.

Hope everyone celebrating Christmas Eve has a great one :)

What're your Christmas Eve plans?

Filofax Loving

Does anyone remember the scene when Katherine Heigl in 27 Dresses goes crazy when she loses her planner?
She's screaming "Where's my Filofax?!"  and then James Marsden gives it back to her?
Yeah. I bet y'all thought she was crazy for being so in love with a planner.

Well, I've got a confession.

I have a Filofax, like Jane (Katherine Heigl's character).
And I am probably just as, if not more, obsessed with it as she is.

Filofax Classic

I know that everyone is about the iCal. Or their phone calendars.
Or even if they do have agendas, it's about famous and chic brands like Kate Spade or LP.
Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Kate Spade and Lilly Pulitzer.
Choosing a new planner every year sounds like so much fun (for the Filofax, you just change the inside pages every year).
I just think that Filofaxes are so under appreciated.

For me, Filofaxes are special, because I got my first Filofax (the Pocket size of the one picture in this entry) from my uncle as my high school graduation present.
My mother has had the same Filofax from 25 years ago- she writes her schedule and even jots down her personal thoughts once in a while.
I got a Personal size (same as the one I got from my uncle, except bigger) for Christmas last year.

Therefore, Filofaxes have a meaning in my life.
It's been something that was given to me to show that I succeeded.
It's been something that have stayed my mother's companion since even before she got married.
It's been something that I grew into, as my schedule got busier as I grew older.

It's been a record of my life and my family's. And I think that's pretty darn cool.

So yes, I do wish that I had the beautiful Lilly agendas.
But, I am happy buying my refill for my Filofax every year, because it means a lot to me.

Does anyone have a strong attachment to a certain piece of stationary stuff like I do?

OOTD - Exam Edition

From yesterday for my exam!

Do any of you dress in a particular way for exams?
I used to dress in sweatpants freshman year so that I would have maximum comfort, but my clothing taste for exams (ahem) have changed over time...

Nowadays, I like to go for comfort and classy for exams- it's important for me to dress up so that I feel good about myself, but I want to be comfortable when I take my exams.

Shirt: Gilly Hicks
Cable Knit: Vineyard Vines
Pants: Japan (Honeys)
Boots: DSW
Scarf: Spain

What're your favourite "exam outfits"?

Bath and Body Works Loving

I'm almost done! 5 down 1 more to go!

Anyways, I don't know if anyone knows, but I am obsessed with Bath and Body Works lotions.
They act as perfume but they're not too strong, and they keep my hands soft!  :)
Plus, it's cheap at 11 dollars.

Here are my favourite scents:
Be Enchanted

Black Raspberry Vanilla

Warm Vanilla Sugar

Vanilla Bean Noel

I grew up loving the Black Raspberry Vanilla ever since my middle school best friend gave me its lotion in middle school!
But lately, I've been branching out- my current favourite is Be Enchanted.
I use the Vanilla Bean Noel back at home!

Also, the packaging is ADORABLE.

Which Bath and Body Works is your favourite?

Classic Outfits

Quick post, as I am (still) dying from finals...!

I ran into this photo while wandering around weheartit (read: procrastination).

This outfit is so nice- it could go with fall OR winter, depending on what else you wear!
The shades of blue and green match perfectly as well, and the polka dotted shirt makes it even better.
The gold jewelry also makes a great addition to the sea of blue. It would be a perfect outfit to go to class or running errands in, and looks comfortable without looking frumpy or anything like that.

Don't you love this?! :)

Finals, finals, finals!

Oh. Oh. Hey. Hello. Howdy.
This is what I feel like my life has turned into:

Image via WeHeartit

Except I'm not Rory. Nor am I at Chilton (funny enough, Chilton rhymes...). Nor am I at Yale. But, you know. This is how I feel like my life is.

I am in the middle of finals right now - well, this is the last day of my reading period- and I am DROWNING in work. Quite literally.
Which is funny, because ALL of my exams are on Monday (well, three of them are). And one is on Tuesday. And I have a paper due at noon tomorrow - well, today, I guess.

Andy my housemate will run me down with an axe if I do not clean the toilet. Which I'll do at noon tomorrow. Ha.

Anyways, I will be back soon, and good luck to everyone else in the middle of finals!

Finals Studying Essentials

Finals season is fast approaching... I'm sure that some of you are already taking them, in fact!

So here are a couple of things you would definitely need while studying...
Well, this is a list of my essentials, anyway ;-)

Finals Studying Essentials

1. Earbuds/Headphones/Call 'em Whatever: Even when I'm studying in my own apartment, since I live with three other girls, I always hear outside noise. So I pop these in (especially if I am in the library!) and turn the music on. I usually listen to classical music when I'm intensely working.

2. Notebook: I tend to write random thoughts during studying (like an idea for an argument for a paper) on random paper. Thus, it's useful to have notebooks lying around for me! Plus, what's better than an adorable notebook to motivate you to study? ;-)

3. Eye drops: If you're looking at your laptop for an extended amount of time, these are a must. They keep your eyes from becoming too tired and prevent migraines!

4. Hair ties: Keep your hair out of your way when you study. Go for these types so that they don't cause you migraines etc. when you study!

5. Blanket: I believe in being warm and comfortable while you study. While this may be impossible to bring to a library, if you're studying in your room, it's a must have

6. A Great Set of Pens, Pencils, Highlighters: Enough said.

7. Lip Balm: Chapped lips really bug me. It's also a good way to take a break; it lets your mind wander for two seconds and then you're back into the studying!

8. Coffee: Need I say more? STREAMLINE STREAMLINE STREAMLINE! (but really) I used to drink eight cups a day during exam season my freshman year... haha. So do it in moderation, please?

9. Little Snacks: I like Jolly Ranchers because they last for a while in your mouth. And the grape flavour is just too yummy. But it's good to have these because it will keep your brain going and if your hunger isn't too bad, the hunger away as well.

What're your studying essentials?

Classically Formal

My sorority Alpha Omicron Pi had a formal last weekend!

We rented out a restaurant - they had Mediterranean food and most of it was fabulous :)

I know it's weird that I blur out my fotos, but I feel like it's weird putting other people's faces up on such a public domain without their permission... So if you're in one of these photos, let me know if it makes you feel uncomfortable of if you want your face in it, haha.

I can't believe that this is my second to last formal. Crazy, huh?
I still remember going through recruitment and getting my bid like it was yesterday!

All Nighter Coziness

All Nighter Coziness

Madewell top / American Eagle Outfitters / Old Navy flannel shorts

So I was basically doing an all nighter. And I was thinking about how I would never, ever wear hoodies, sweatpants, and pj pants out into the public, but how incredibly perfect they were to all nighters.
So came up with a few comfortable yet moderately cute for the house outfits.

My favourite comfort clothing is definitely the one on the left- except my hoodie is a bright red "Sydney University," where my sister studied abroad for a semester!

All of these are just so comfortable and cute (in a I'm pulling an all nighter) kind of way! :)

Classically Vineyard Vines (December 2012)

Vineyard Vines have released its new arrivals!

Here are a couple of my favourites :)

Confetti Shorts
I just love the print on these shorts. Although New England doesn't allow me to wear shorts during the winter (or I'd freeze... HA), a girl can dream, right?

Seaboard Striped Top
I'm a sucker for striped tops, and this neckline is A-D-O-R-A-B-L-E.

Whale Intarsia Sweater
The little colourful whale prints would brighten up any dreary winter day :)

Confetti Dress
Probably my favourite one out of the collection. Can someone say, fabulous?
I love the pattern! I could probably wear this in the summer as well! Ahh this will definitely be on my watch list this season.

Quilted Bow Clutch
I can't handle how cute this is! I've been in a quilted clutch/bag/everything in general phase for the past couple of weeks, and this combined with the bow is just... perfect.
I would love to bring this to a holiday party at work or something.

What are your favourites from the new arrivals?

Adorable Clutch via Kate Spade

I was doing some pre-final studying procrastination and stumbled upon this lovely little item.

Will someone please buy me this? I'm in love!
Kate Spade Post Street Little Adair

Wouldn't it be adorable if I paired the clutch with some other gold accessories and this adorable Lilly dress?

Navy and Gold Party

Lilly Pulitzer sleeveless dress / Kate Spade ballet high heels / Kate Spade / Kate Spade gold jewelry
(Please excuse the horrible dress cutout though- I am just terrible at the tracing thing!)

Anyone loving the navy and gold thing as much as I am?
